What does a coffee lab know about schizophrenia?
Share
At HUMA, we know we're not experts in schizophrenia. In fact, until three months ago, our knowledge of this mental condition was quite limited. However, everything changed when we welcomed Martita into our lab as part of a job inclusion project for people with psychosocial disabilities. Martita has not only become a valuable part of our team but has also taught us a lot about the importance of support, inclusion, and empathy.
What is the IDEA Project?
Project IDEA, which stands for Inclusion, Development, and Art, is an artistic initiative by the Guayaquil Charity Board that seeks to promote social inclusion and improve mental health through art. This project benefits 16 residents with serious mental illnesses, offering them tools and opportunities to integrate functionally and dignifiedly into society. The initiative transforms these individuals into recognized artists, leaving behind the label of "patients" to become active participants in society. In the project's own words: "This is art. They are artists, not patients."
HUMA's Commitment
At HUMA, we've learned that we can't empathize with the unknown. Institutionalizing people with mental illness is often seen as a solution, but in reality, incarceration without the possibility of escape only makes the illness chronic and renders them invisible. That's why we joined the IDEA Project, because we firmly believe in the importance of making these people visible, of knowing their stories, and of sharing their talents with the world.
IDEA x HUMA Project
Our collaboration with the IDEA Project will extend over the next four months, during which time we will support 16 emerging artists who are part of the project. As part of this initiative, we have created four unique coffee labels, inspired by the artwork of these talented artists. Each label represents a story, an origin, and a creative expression worth discovering.
We invite you to discover the stories behind each work of art on our labels. This collaboration not only celebrates specialty coffee, but also the power of art to transform lives and shift perspectives. Join us for our ongoing activities to appreciate the incredible work of these 16 artists, learn more about the IDEA Project, and contribute to a more inclusive world.
